I Deserve It! is working to bring about a paradigm shift that illuminates and solves for the twenty-five-year difference in life expectancy experienced by New Orleans' majority Black neighborhoods.
I Deserve It! is a collaborative effort of Ashé Cultural Arts Center and New Orleans East Hospital.
WE’RE DIFFERENT.
Our trained staff of Community Health Workers come from our communities. We are influencers, musicians, artists, and health professionals.
We're different because we listen, we care, and we're invested in making life better for all of us.
PROMOTING
A CULTURE OF WELLNESS
In New Orleans, Black residents have higher rates of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and poor mental health. These conditions are exacerbated by historically higher uninsured rates due to systemic community disinvestment. These disadvantages have led to a 15- to 25-year deficit in life expectancy between Black communities and the city’s wealthier, whiter neighborhoods.
To address these issues, I Deserve It! is training artists and culture bearers to serve as community health workers that deliver health messaging, resources and education to residents of neighborhoods with poor health outcomes.

Because we are here — present and on purpose.
Because we are not afterthoughts or things looking to be put off for another time.
Because our health, wellness, and overall well being are all worthy of full expression, functioning at optimal levels, and sustained by lifestyles thriving in a culture of consciousness, care, and concern.
We deserve to live long lives, surrounded by supportive communities and safe neighborhoods. We have a right to affordable, accessible, and quality housing, food, and healthcare.
It is here we proclaim, “I Deserve It!” Where the collective “I” comes together- unified, dignified, and aware; empowered by one another’s existence, knowing we are all deserving of every good thing this life has to offer.
