THE ASHÉ MEMORY PROJECT

Dig deeper into essential narratives that have helped shape contemporary New Orleans.

The Ashé Memory Project was started in 2013 by Dr. Al Kennedy, Ph.D., and founding Executive Director Carol Bebelle. It was designed to retain and showcase Ashe’s 20+ year history and to orient the next generation of leaders. The project consists of archived materials accessible through Ashé’s in-house archives as well as the Amistad Research Center. The project also includes oral histories of Ms. Bebelle and community partners, which discuss Ashé’s founding, growth and developments, grounding principles, and significance over time to broader communities. Click the links below for excerpts of these oral histories.

The Memory Project is for all interested in Ashé. This is a space for long-time community partners to reflect on Ashé’s journey, and for new members to come and delve into the rich history of this space. It is a home for scholars, researchers, and students to dig deeper into essential narratives that have helped shape contemporary New Orleans. As well, it is a place to learn from the foundational wisdom and lessons Ashé CAC’s history provides, to build a similar center in your own neighborhood.
