REDD LINEN NIGHT
“Everything that we heard about from Africa was that the artists were an essential part of the community. You didn’t create outside your community, you just didn’t create art for art. Whatever you created was a part of the community you lived in.”
- Douglas Redd (1947-2007)
Co-Founder
Ashé Cultural Arts Center
Named for Ashé's co-founder, Douglas Redd (1947-2007), Redd Linen Night is a celebration of his life and visual artistry.
Portrait of Douglas Redd by Adewale Adenle
His work has been described as the pivotal graphic influence for many of the African, African American and Caribbean programs and events held in New Orleans, as far back as the 1970s.
Redd Linen Night is Ashé’s premiere annual fundraiser and a celebration of the life and visual art work of Ashé’s cofounder Douglas Redd. More than just an art exhibit, the event pairs stunning live performance art with amazing visual art pieces. Just as “linen night” is synonymous with art openings in the French Quarter and the Warehouse District, the moniker is embraced for Central City. The show features prominent and emerging artists, some who were mentees, contemporaries or protégés of Redd.
Adorn yourself in red linen or any other red you can find and join this celebration of life, art, and legacy.
